Road construction leads to better mileage (well sort of)
The way I normally go to work has been closed for the last couple weeks. Not sure what they're doing, doesn't look like much but I sure hope they're fixing the road. Then there's another spot a mile from that where they're adding a turn lane for the ritzy RV resort. Taking the detour and dealing with the flagman backup cost me mileage, plus added about 1.5 miles to the commute.
So this week I've been going the other way. The hills are not as steep so I can get better mileage that way. It's 1.1 miles longer (4.3%) and more beat up so I used to avoid it, the mileage gain was a wash with the extra distance. But with the road construction the original way, it pays off. Been getting about 37-39 mpg to work and back all week. Lowest was 36.8 this morning at 40F. Best was 39.2 yesterday going home at about 70F.
