"Road Load Measurement...Coastdown Techniques"

This is the DOT/EPA document outlining *how* Road Load measurements using coastdown techniques (implementation of SAE Standard J2263) are to be performed:

http://avt.inel.gov/pdf/hev/htp001r2.pdf

It provides insight into *how* similar testing should be performed by individual car owners.

Of particular interest might be these:

• page 2, Item 4.6 - coastdown must include 65-to-10 mph, but 75-to-5 mph is preferred; vehicle must begin at 5 mph higher than coastdown value.

• page 7, Item 7.2 - data is reduced to 55-to-45 mph coastdown on chassis dyno.

• page 9, 'Vehicle Frontal Area Estimation': A = (0.8)(H.inches)(W.inches)/144

If it is okay with the other moderators, I would like to move this to the Aerodynamic section and sticky this thread. Very valuable information here!

Maybe a few paragraphs of . . .

. . . the theory behind the protocol is needed. Procedures, charts and glossary do little to help the reader understand WHY.
