This is probably my favorite lakes racer, hands down. I believe The Rodder's Journal did a piece on it recently, in conjunction with the Pebble Beach special on LSRs.
(It's also interesting to note that this is very different from Jaray's approach to streamlining)
Don't you love the white lettered tires sticking down from the body? Drool!
Man, the future used to look so cool

It would be devilish to drive -- there is almost no way to see out? Obviously only meant for the salt flats.
Very similar to the Audi and Mercedes streamliners.

I notice that the pics show two different treatments at the extreme aft
end of the body work.
Since it appears in the Pebble Beach pictures, I take it that the treatment
with the aft edge closed was the final configuration. (I take it that what
appears to be a pipe end is a push point.)
Then there's the other treatment with a shortened aft edge surrounding a
full width horizontal slit. What would that have been for, driver ventilation?
Would the car even have wheel wells and the slit being a wheel well vent?
At any rate, it doesn't appear that it made the grade.

I think the one picture at the bottom is missing the last piece? The others show a seam at the joint.

Hello -
Testor's makes salt flat racers kits :
Testors Salt Flat Racers 'Turbo-Go', previewed by Scott Van Aken
Quote:
Initially released in the 1960s by Hawk, Testors has chosen to reissue four of these cars. These are about as basic a kit as you will ever find. There is a common body and wheels and canopy. You'll notice that the center section is separate and this is where the variation of designs comes into play. By substituting different center pieces, you can have a number of different designs, while keeping the same basic car. It is probably one of the earliest cases of having the same base kit and then providing for variants. Hawk was ahead of its time.
This kit was also designed to 'do stuff'. In this case, it was to be rubber band powered so you could send it scooting along along the carpet on its hollow plastic wheels. All the bits seem to be there to duplicate this, but sadly, Testors has chosen not to include that information in the instructions. I should also point out that there is no driver and no cockpit. Instructions consist of 8 photographs showing the various construction steps. No color info is given so the modeler is free to allow imagination to take over and come up with whatever is wanted.

None of them have any plan taper -- this could significantly lower drag.
