yah, getting rid of 13/14ths of the population is gonna cause some complaints, but ah well. We've been killing other species like nobody's business, so our turn will come. Stuff happens and then you die. I only hope the remaining 1/14 aren't cretins, ok well maybe that would be a good thing, who knows.

If we live sustainably there is room enough to spare on this planet. Enough land to live on, enough resources to grow food.

I am really more a quality of life person over quantity of life. There is nothing sustainable about what we are doing. Even with every square inch of farm-able land being forced into overproduction, we still have lots of hungry people, apparently. It doesn't work, and I agree that it is completely unstable.

Nobody commented on my idea of spending $100 billion on ecomodding?
New idea:
Invest $95b. Spend five billion the first year and the interest above inflation each remaining year on science fairs, with the winners receiving scholarships.

Every so often you see a story in the media about how Uhmericans waste 40% of the food here.
Based on what I see, I'd say that's a conservative estimate.
If anyone goes hungry in this country, it is only because they don't know where to look.

Thought I had. If you want to take an upper limit, figure the Earth intercepts ~700 watts/m^2 of solar energy (perpendicular to incoming sunlight), multiply by pi * (radius of earth ^2) * efficiency of photosynthesis, and convert to calories.
But of course, like the "Answers in Genesis" folks, observed facts stand no chance against faith.

Strange how I keep missing posts, especially in my own threads. I did not post my entire assignment, although I included the in-line citation. Here is the full one: DeParle, J. (2009, November 16). Hunger in U.S. at a 14-Year High. New York Times, p. A14.
Doing a Google search for "DeParle, J. 2009 hunger" yielded an archive of the article as the very first result. Here is a direct link:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/17/us/17hunger.html?_r=0
For the record, I like my idea of investing most of the money and using the interest for science fairs.
