Here are a few different pickup aero configurations with qualitative results

2nd video with 2-D flow, 3D-printed models
Here's a second video by same folks.
You'll notice the separation behind the 'aeroshell'.
Then, when smoke is introduced into the wake, the smoke momentarily indicates the outline of the preferred contour for fully-attached flow.

Review of Cybertruck, Raptor, and RAM
Just for giggles, here's a CFD tentative glimpse into aero for the Tesla, Ford, and Dodge.

In the second video I like when they hit the smoke hard and you can see what appears to be the ideal shape.

Rivian aero
It's a short video.
At the very end, and with very low contrast, you can just make out that the road dust has made it all the way to behind the cab, indicating compromised flow ( counterflow ) at the rear.

a review of Spirit's flow
Going back in time, I intentionally 'buried' the smoke in the boundary layer to illustrate the attached flow to the very end of the body.
Between the two trips to the tunnel, the all the combinations of configurations, she indicated for a minimum below Cd 0.18. I hope to verify that.

I thought it was VERY clever. Like a 'vertical' water table. Quick-change.
In Lubbock, Texas, there's a museum with a science section, and vertical fluid dynamics wall.
They use powdered-aluminum suspended in glycerin, flowing across the 'screen.'
Two-dimensional models can be retrieved from the bottom, and held in place with magnets. And can be 'pitched' 360-degrees with a twist of the magnet. Also clever.
Yeah, we must be having 'fun', 'cause time is surely racing away.

Yes. I've always interpreted this 'phenomena' as the ' 1st-Principle' in streamlining.
Whether with smoke, or dark-blue-green in CFD, the flow appears to 'whisper' to us.
Modifying the model to agree with the turbulence-filled void is also, basically what Fachsenfeld-Kamm did in the mid-1930s at the FKFS, next door to Daimler-Benz ( Mercedes-Benz ).
Fachsenfeld's inflatable boat tail follows this premise exactly. And was not lost on Mercedes-Benz Cd 0.19, IAA concept's extensible tail panels.
