Shopping for GEO
I've been looking for an early Geo to mod, but having trouble finding a reasonably clean one. Do you guys think I'd do just as well with a later model? It would be nice to be able to run a Scangauge, and I could use a 4 cyl trans for the taller final drive. Most of my driving is on country roads at 45-55 mph.

Look at what MetroMPG has done. The potential is there!

The difference between the early & later cars in terms of MPG is minimal. The ability to simply plug a ScanGauge (or equivalent) into an OBD-II car to get feedback on driving & mods is priceless. All else being equal, I'd probably pick a later car for that reason alone.

Fate has decided the matter for me. I found an '89 in beautiful shape, apparently with the odo really on its first go-round. Mirror delete already in place. The game's afoot!

Congrats!
Add it to the garage and start your fuel log.
And make plans to get an MPGuino in there. It'll be interesting to see how you do with it.

Thanks! I think I'll wait until my first fillup to add to garage. I went to the EPA site for the fuel economy number, and it shows the '89 base Metro with 47 mpg combined, and my LSi with only 41. What's the spec difference to account for this?

47 happens to be the combined rating for the 1990 XFi. In '89 there was no XFi model, but I've read on teamswift that the base version had the XFi specs that year, which would explain the difference.
