"Simplest DIY battery monitor you'll ever see"?

Posting this in the Fossil Fuel Free forum since I figure people here will care more about this:

FYI, Autospeed is running an item next week:

Next week we cover the simplest DIY digital battery monitor you'll ever see. It's accurate, chea p and very effective.
I was somewhat reluctant to post this after the somewhat over the top (in my opinion) treatment given to the BSFC instrumentation covered recently, but maybe this meter will prove to be worthwhile for EV tinkerers.

It's not a DMM is it? Now that my car will have batteries in it I'm interested to see this.

Far as I'm concerned, it's not a battery monitor at all - it's a 12V voltmeter install. Not useful on the traction pack, but one may prefer this style for the 12V system.

Also consider that some (lower-quality) gauges of this style do not function properly in the cold, and are not weatherproof.
