Slow driving question

When driving my Dodge Dakota it seems like I get better fuel economy when I'm not putting it in the highest gears for coasting but rather when I drive normally. The difference seems to be 1mpg by the end of the tank(I don't have a scangauge yet). Anyone have any idea on why this is happening.

You have a manual : put it in neutral to coast
And start coasting a lot further.

If it's left in gear, it'll be braking rather than coasting.
That's OK if you want to brake, or when you're coming down a hill and need to control your speed.

But when you want to slow down ... well err... very slowly, just shove it into neutral and enjoy the long coasts.
It means you need to be looking ahead a LOT further as well.
