I had a technology in education class before I decided to graduate in Spanish and I remember writing about where I thought technology was going. All that I recall was that I wrote that one day we would be able to implant cell phones, control them mentally, and effectively have telepathy.

Of course, people will use this to exchange dancing feces emojos.

And even then, the tablet a) really isn't big enough to read topo maps, and b) like the cell phone, isn't readable outside in the daytime, unless you can find a really shady spot.

When I'm inside the house, trying to figure out if I should pull air in through an open window with a box fan, or push it out, I need to know which direction the wind is blowing so I'm not fighting against it. That lends itself to a phone, which is on my person at all times.

Nothing I've ever typed here has been done on a phone. If it's more than a few words, it's not worth me fighting the touchscreen.

Topo maps are extremely useful on phones. You can zoom to see whatever amount of detail you need, and the route will give you an ETA to various points. This helps you plan things like water filtration stops, and how much lollygagging you can do. I ran my topo the entire ~40 mile Whitney summit trip.

Some people are extremely good at mental math, and I'm not bad. That said, when pizza is sold by diameter, calculating the best deal in your head gets tricky. If all food items would simply list the cost per weight or volume, I wouldn't find the need to use the calculator so much. Somehow we ended up with a society that gives little concern to how much something actually costs per unit, but emphasises the brand and uses meaningless descriptors rather than meaningful information.

Even when I had a physical keyboard I typed far faster on my computer. Then there is the mouse. While I can have many apps side-by-side on my phone, it is not very useful.
