There is a pretty simple explanation for that - labor costs. Cut labor costs by 90% and a bunch of cars that aren't economical to fix in the USA suddenly have a new lease on life.

There might have something to do with the taxation, considering SUVs are registered as a light truck there. As trucks are at least suppposed to be a work vehicle, eventually when a business issues a vehicle to an employee, let's say a sales representative for instance, it may actually seem to make more sense to issue some random soccer-mom SUV than a hatchback like the Chevrolet Onix available in some parts of Latin America (while in others only the sedan is available, sourced from China instead of Brazil, having previously also been made in Mexico before its production there was phased out and the Onix sold in Mexico is now also sourced from China, clearing space at the San Luís Potosí factory to make the Equinox for export, increasing the total output as the Ramos Arizpe factory is still making the Equinox too).

Truth be told, it's not as small as a Suzuki Swift/Chevrolet Metro, but it also has a 3-cyl 1.0L engine (or 1.2L for some export markets) either naturally-aspirated or turbocharged (with the 1.0L being the only turbocharged option even for export markets).

What would you expect? Having a dog requires me to take her for some walks. Otherwise I would've already bought a motorcycle instead

But, but, you said your knees precluded you from operating a motorcycle.

Sure I wouldn't look for a heavy motorcycle, but anyway, my knees are nothing to write home about, yet it used to be worse from 2019 to 2021. I even had to walk with a cane for a while, but around 2 years ago a phisician told me I would be able to ride motorcycles sooner than I expected. Well, after having a heated argument with my mother in December 2021, which prompted me to get closer to my father and stepmother once again, I no longer needed to walk with that cane.

On a sidenote, prior to my grandmother's death in 2015, I was really close to convince her it would be OK for me to ride motorcycles, because she feared the hell out of it due to my father's history of serious motorcycle crashes. I went as far as telling her I would consider getting a sidecar so she could enjoy it too.

MISSING a bit of data here: miraculous recovery or some sort of external process like knee replacement?

There is also the question of why someone old enough to have a beard like that needs permission from a mother or grandmother to ride motorcycles.
