Sure easy credit has some influence on the sales of more sophisticated cars, but it's also motivated by the lack of awareness that maintenance also becomes more costly. Some folks only look at the monthly payments and then got screwed with a lemon they can't afford the TCO.

Please explain why I would want to buy a cheap new car, when I can buy an inexpensive used car.

To date the Insight is the only car I've paid over $5K for, and I paid well under half the new price for it.

I can't speak for you, but this is my case. The most I've paid was for the Superbeetle — $5,550 was $50 less than NADA mid-book. NADA mid-book is currently $9,150.

I want to buy a cheap new car because it will be an electric tandem reverse-tricycle. None are available used.

That's a pretty good reason for not buying a used one, then. But not, I think, quite what the question was asking.

"So why do you think there are no cheap basic cars being sold new?"
////////
We had two cars, one was Hyundai Accent. Altho it was only rated at EPA highway 32MPG, I could get 44-45MPG with it. One dealer during the recession, sold two Accents for $14,000. We didn't need 4 cars, but I did try to find someone to split the deal, to no avail. Later, I put larger diameter used tires on the Accent, dropped the highway rpms by 300 & got 48MPG. Sure wished I could have found someone to buy in with me.

I guess the easiest way to increase sales of a cheap small car in the American market would be turning it into some trucklet.
