Having done the measurements on electric power needs to run a Metro, I'm sure that solar cells on the hood/roof could put an easily measurable dent in fuel consumption... with about half a dozen caveats (none insignificant)!

That quote is the from the end of the Arena episode, where Kirk is making a bazooka to shoot the Gorn lizard dude. That quote is the story of my life, so I've been waiting to use it, not unlike a trapdoor spider. I would put that 15 seconds on youtube, but I'm almost sure Paramount would make me remove it, .

I would think those solar panels on that insight would mess with the aerodynamics over the hood.

It would be kinda cool to make racing stripes on the hood, across the roof, and onto the trunk with solar cells though...

As long as he made the array with a smooth surface (encapsulated in resin, like the solar cars for example), and faired the leading/side/trailing edges of the "panel" into the hood, I think the aero impact would be minimal to nil.

there might be a small market for EV and hybrid owners if you made a carbon fiber or fiberglass hood that had PV built in to it, starting from scratch instead of retro fitting.
I would also rather just buy quality PV panels that are already in frames, with a warranty and made in a union factory in the US where they document that they are handling the chemicals properly instead of buying discount PV moduals from china where they have documented dumping of toxic chemicals.
