I know this is old school styling and marketing. I have to wonder, how many people back then bought into this?

Is the general public today any more aware or just too skeptical to fall for this sort of gag?

Maybe "gag" is too cruel, the curved greenhouse is much more aero than the boxes of the late 1970's and early 1980's.

That year,Chrysler Corp. had a Ghia-built Dodge Dart concept car with Cd 0.17.It did have fins, but it also had a great compound windshield and really nice roofline.
Of course they didn't offer it.The car pictured would have had a Cd on the order of 0.54.

It looks like a dart. I wonder how far they can turn the front wheels?

The tail of the 56 Plymouth is similar to other cars of the era like the 57 Chevy.

I know this rear slope on the pick up truck below is too steep to be "aero", but the tail/fin effect is pretty novel.

It looks a lot like the Kaiser 'Henry-J',which was very popular with hot-rodders.

Virgil Exner did an article on the Dart Concept, replete with tufted wind tunnel model photos.

Styling, fins, aerodynamics, and the Dart concept car

Hmmm....I wonder if those fins reduced the trailing side vortices? Maybe it's time to bring back the tail fin. Perhaps they could reintroduce it as part of the "new" "new" Chrysler.
It would only be a half-century late.

"Suddenly, it's 1956!"

How about it Sergio? After all, Chrysler's Italian Connection didn't start in 2009, now did it?

Come to think of it, The Dart Concept shows a similarity to the Alfa Romeo B.A.T. Concepts done in 1953-55 at Bertone by the great Franco Scaglione. One of them achieved a CD of 0.19.

Coincidence?
BTW The Italians have proved over and over (as did Exner) that "aerodynamic" is not a synonym for "butt-ugly".
I'malso including Luigi Colani in this, although I know he's Swiss. (originally)

Maybe we can learn something.
