Still big for me!!!

I know some of you get better mileage than I do, but for the second time I've managed 38 MPG with my 6 year old Neon...

I'm the kind of guy that before joining this site, could probably have had no better than 30 MPG from a Prius...

38 from four cyl injected 2+liters, is very good. going beyond brings anomolies. sustaining the 38 is even better...

I should mention that I haven't slowed down substantially, and that some of this is even carpooling (through a mountain pass!!!)... Basic alterations are in how I get to speed, braking and managing traffic around me, just like I do with my Jeep. (now if I could get 25 MPG from my Jeep that would equal or better what I do with the Neon...). I tried engine off coasting, but am uncomfortable with the lack of steering and brake control, remember I drive where the deer and the antelope roam. LITERALLY! Not to mention the infrequent but all to real Bovinus Rex escapees... Besides, my carpoolers are VERY uncomfortable when I tried EOC!!!

38mpg carpooling beats the snot out of a Prius driver riding alone. That's man-miles per gallon: multiply your mpg by number of occupants, and there you have it. If there's two of you, you're already deep into the 70+mmpg range.

I was claiming 80 MPG with my Jeep when using it for carpooling (the whole man-miles thing you mention).

SVO, I guess I'm not totally hopeless...

Even if you're a left-lane ecodriver like me, the techniques and mods here save lots of gas. With a few more mods and a little bit more EOC, you can reach 40mpg.

Power brakes: I get one assisted application out of my brake pedal. So if I kill the engine, then don't touch the brake pedal (or don't let it out once I depress it), I still have assist.

Power steering: two hands on the wheel works for me. It took a few weeks, but I'm comfortable with EOC unless traffic is heavy.
