Subaru WRX Sti streamline template - Hatch vs. Sedan

Did this really quick at work...

Subuaru claims that the WRX/Sti sedan is more aerodynamic than the hatch by 0.1.

Sedan = 0.34 cd
Hatch = 0.35 cd

I did a quick streamlining template of the hatch vs sedan. Now i can see why.

It appears that the STI wing (no matter how gaudy and huge it is), it actually follows the aerodynamic streamlining template a lot better than the hatch.

It also appears that the hatch drops off to sharply in the rear, hence it could explain why it's cd is slightly higher than the sedan

Subaru claims that the extra 0.1cd reduction in the sedan gives the sedan a higher top speed of 155 vs 153 of the hatchback.

Old thread, I know, but I just found it and that hatch is exactly the STi that I want to get. Mainly replying to save it for myself.

I wonder how this comparison would hold up if the hatch got the donkey crx treatment. But that's just a dream for now lol.

I think the obvious next choice is to connect the roofline of the STI to the wing of the STI.

That's a really good idea lol. It gives you a great frame to work with.

And looking at those side by side, I never noticed quite how different the rear bumper area is. The hatch is a lot shorter after the rear wheels!

I think that is usually the case on three-door hatchbacks. I know my brother-in-law's Focus hatchback was shorter than my Focus sedan. Hatchbacks tend to be less expensive because they are smaller.

I like the idea of a perforated sheet metal box cavity. Air would flow over the general contour, pressure balance across the perforations and you could see through it.
