Its the phase change that holds a lot of energy when using waxes as heat storage.

It would be really cool if everyone could post pictures of their DiY insulation under the hood! It'll help give others ideas on how to make their own. Is there a thread that has a compilation of insulated engine bays already? If not, someone should make one! Just my $0.02=-D

this is an interesting thread, indeed. So many cool ideas!! I'd like to design a 2-radiator system to plumb into my Subaru when the original rad would need replacing. Summers run hot but winters, so hard to get up to and keep operating temp high. I did a cardboard upper grille block, this year it will be FRP. And I have no hood insulation, I may DIY some up.

Install a higher temp thermostat, first off. Like 190*. That should take care of the cold winter problem. If it doesn't, there's likely something else wrong with your car. I'm positive it didnt' do that new.

A higher temp thermostat would solve the same purpose as two radiators, and it would be partially open a mid range temps and turn the large radiator into a small one.

The only exception is your engine must be able to handle the rise to that temperature and/or your cooling system respond quick enough when it reaches that peak that the total temp peak doesn't go higher than what the engine can handle.
An adjustable grill block would probably be necessary for many who run one.

There is another thread going right now on same topic , so I wiil ask same question: anyone try 'rock wool' type insulation under hood ? Does not burn, is water and sound proof. I do not know cost or availability though.

One of the things I find interesting is that my Insight seems to need to sit for a few minutes once warmmed up to stay warm to or at operating temperature. If I start up and drive nonstop its always below 180 regardless of heater use in the colder weather. If I stop at a stop light for a few minutes it then stays at 180 and may go up or down a few degrees, usually a few more like 184.
