Or better yet, TDI>Lotus with gear mods and possibly get 40+mpg while retaining Sport functionality(Im pretty sure i have seen this lotus on another forum before when i looked up Rear diffussers for inspiration)
Or turn the beetle into a sleeper street car, and do some aeromods

It's all a matter of perspective... I think the TDI engine would ruin the Lotus much as others think the TDI will ruin the Insight. I already get 30 mpg when I stay off the skinny pedal in the Exige. It's hard to do that though...
My screenname is "Bane" on LotusTalk and a few other forums. My car has the difflow 5-element rear diffuser. I may make one for the Insight although aero mods are pretty low on the priority list right now.

I'd absolutely love to do this. We decided if the engine doesn't easily fit in the front we'll attempt to stuff it in the back. The suspension work alone is daunting and it would likely add at least another year to the project. I'm not going to do it unless I can do it right
I got a chance to work on the Insight for a few hours this weekend... here's a teaser pic:

If it doesn't roll coal, it's not good
Just kidding, I didn't turn to Diesel to "roll coal", since the "coal" is basically wasted incompletely-burnt fuel

Congrats. This is a neat project. Garaging a car 24/7 would never be an option for me... my car is a tool, a daily go box.

Good deal. Does this restrict the number of miles per year you can put on it. I think it's that way for some states--"collector vehicles" can only be driven for a certain number of miles per year.

Yes, I can only drive it 5000 miles per year. I think that will be fine since I have a few other vehicles.
On another note, the Beetle has been taken apart

Not even here in the 3rd-world we have such restrictions to collector vehicles
