one peace drive line, compared to a two peace
comparing two drive lines of the same length, size, yokes ECT.
a one peace drive line, compared to a two peace with a carrier bearing.
how much efficiency is to be had buy converting to a one peace drive line.
is it less then 1% or is it like 1.5 to 3%  just guessing, i really dont see it being more then 4% better/
several people have done it on the Isuzu site, and i was wondering was it worth it?
the same wheel base auto was sold as a one peace drive line its just the body/frame on them is about 2" lower then the 4wd i have....

one way to measure it is to measure the amount of heat the items generate. To take even one horsepower, it will get HOT.
But the short answer is there is no difference if they are the same weight.
A driveline out of balance will take a bit of energy - the vibrations are turned into lost horsepower.

This the kind of mod that, to me, falls into either the "convenience" or "pleasure" category: make the mod if/when it is convenient because the part needs replacing anyway, but otherwise only if you are interested (as in the pleasure of the learning). Every little bit counts in the end, but some little bits are harder to attain than others.

so the added angel joint where the carrier bearing is, will be the only thing that would make any difference.
its not a U-joint, its more like a ball on a pivot, and the small bearing in the carrier.
ok so not that much at all, just about more to be had by reducing 15ish lbs of auto load.
a bit of the cross member comes out to do it, plus the carrier bearing, granted the drive line will get a few pounds bigger...
clearly, much more to be had buy doing a gearing swap.
ill likely do bolth at the same time, being the auto will be getting many changes.

You might save a small amount of rotating mass, but like drmiller said, you risk getting something out of balance, which hurts efficiency. You'd save more with a lightened flywheel, which depending on your drive, might not help as much as you would like. It takes less energy to get up to speed, but if you're driving mostly highway, you lose some of your coasting based on the lower rotational mass. Always tradeoffs.
Take the spare and the the jack out of your car, save around 50lbs, and enjoy the same benefits (or more) that you'd get from that one piece driveshaft.....for free! (fixaflat and AAA are your friends)
