News says the fire is contained to 1 of the 40 batteries on site. The battery system has been disconnected from the grid.

Will be interesting in the future when rioters light EV police cars on fire and protocol is to let it burn out.

... this makes me less enthusiastic about Powerwall type batteries strapped to garage walls. Would rather have my battery backup contained within my vehicle, which can be wheeled out of the garage as necessary.

It's concerning if they are in fact lithium-iron-posphate chemistry. That was supposed to be the good one.

Zinc Bromide reflow batteries are more appropriate at that scale.

No idea the chemistry.

That Viking EV guy was saying in another video that LiFePO4 recently became more expensive than some other lithium ion battery type commonly used in cars where energy density is important. Put conversely, that other common type is now cheaper than LiFePO4... kinda making LiFePO chemistry pointless to put in vehicles.

EDIT:

"Recently, the battery chemistry of Megapacks transitioned from a cobalt-containing, manganese, and nickel-heavy NMC cathode formula to lithium-phosphate LMP models."

If your powerwall gets twitchy, your basic garage has a minimum 1/2 hour fire rating. Sucks if the house is built over it.......

Not sure there's enough lithium electrolyte in a powerwall to burn that long.
