Tesla to make compact sedan EV for under $30k (before incentives)
Apparently, after the Model X is finished up and in production, the next step is to develop a lower cost sedan sized similar to a BMW 3-series.
Tesla Will Sell 5 Models In 2016; Small SUV And Sports Car Added
Quote:
The sedan is expected to be roughly the size of a BMW 3-Series..
...
The previously announced entry-level sedan, to be a 2015 model, is targeted for a price before incentives of about $30,000.
...
The sedan will actually be a five-door hatchback, as is the Model S, Musk told Wired.
He called it a "scaled-down Model S," saying it would be "20 to 25 percent smaller" than the current Tesla sedan.

I think the price is about half what it will be when produced (if it is ever produced), like their original that was supposed to be less than 50K.

I wouldn't be surprised if they could get it below 30K. The Leaf is 35K. Nissan also just announced that they'll be putting a 2nd generation battery pack in the Leaf soon that will lower the cost of the vehicle. Give them two more years and its only going to get lower. The price of lithium batteries continues to fall.

I just dont see how the can 'hand produce' for below 30k. Or how the can have the volume to justify the 'mass production' costs

Tesla could be the most aptly named business out there.
Nikolai Tesla seemingly picked something he wanted to do, and created thousands of minor discoveries along the way. If only the car company could realize you need a 'EV Cavalier' for sales and income while you create the ultimate 'EV Corvette', we could have reasonably priced EVs already.
Slim down the NASA tech some, and give us a starter car already!

Quite true. I think the only reason the Leafs can be pumped out so cheaply is because they setup everything for mass production.
We'll really have to wait and see. The Model S should be a much higher volume vehicle than the Roadster was. I'm sure the success of the S and X will influence the future vehicles quite a bit.
