my guess is secondary runners that open at load?

my wifes old 2000 v6 cougar had that, but at 30k on the clock they woud get stuck and the car would hesitate like something awful. actully the car was awful, great areo, decent(ok knda low) power for a v6 (170hp), relaibily sucked warped flex plate was awful on everyone of those cars.

Yeah, thats pretty much it Taco. Here is a pic of a Toyota ACIS manifold off an older engine. In the second picture you can see they use a vacuum actuator to open the butterflies on the secondary runners. When vacuum is low in the intake manifold plenum, the actuator opens up and opens up the secondary runners. To prevent this from happening at too low an rpm (not enough airflow to make the secondary runners worth opening), they use a vacuum solenoid valve. Below X rpm the solenoid stays shut and the actuator can never see low vacuum pressure. Its actually a pretty simple setup.

I have the 2AR-FE in my Rav4 4WD. I'm getting average of 11.4L/100 about 60 city/40 hwy of mix driving. I'll say this is far from being efficient. Tires are inflated to 35psi.

Welcome to the site Jasper.

Sorry to say but I'm going to have to bet that you (and/or horrible traffic) are the biggest problem in your bad fuel economy formula. Your vehicle is rated for 21 city 27 highway, and as you can see from the multitude of users here its not that hard to beat the EPA rating. I'd highly suggest checking out the 100+ hypermiling tips link up at the top of the page. They won't all apply to you but I'm sure there are ones that can. A scangauge or other MPG type meter will definitely help you drive more efficiently as well.

Thanks, I will definitely check out the 100+ hypermiling tips. Yes, there's always horrible traffic in the areas that I drive. Is the scanguage better than the factory trip computer that give me the instant L/100 as well as average L/100 reading? I already switched to 0W20 Royal Purple Synthetic fluid at 1700km. According to the Toyota website the EPA rating is 9.7city/(29)/7.2(39)hwy.

also, jaspher, you may have to wait for the engine to be broken in, usually 2-5k miles, 3-8k kilometers(rough estimate).

Thanks. You're probably right. I have less than 3,000km on the odometer. Hopefully I get some improvements after. The Rav4 is a weekend vehicle that my wife sometimes uses for errands. I put about 100km or less per week on this vehicle. It might take a while to get some kilometers on the odometer.

I love this site. My main focus is to improve the fuel consumption of my daily driver with is a 2006 Corolla with Automatic Transmission. I'm already inflating the tires on the Corolla to the max pressure on the sidewall and installing the original grill that came with the car (more aerodynamic than the Altis grill with vertical lines that's on there now). I have already removed the mudguards last week. I have low rolling resistance tires on the corolla already. 215/45/17 Yokohama Avid Envigor. Vehicle is lowered with Eibach Pro Kit springs.

By the way, looks like you're doing well with the intrepid. That's nice. These vehicles are not known for great fuel economy. What have you done to your vehicle?
