Toyota's Unicorn

Toyota hypes a car that runs on water. ....and electricity

TOYOTA CEO: THIS NEW ENGINE WILL END ELECTRIC CARS," SAYS TOYOTA CEO ABOUT HIS CREATION
Quote:
23:21 ...the motor has a special part called an electrolyzer this part takes in water
23:28 and uses a process called electrolysis to split the water molecules into two different things hydrogen and oxygen
23:37 water is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom stuck together the
23:42 electrolyzer uses a special kind of energy called electricity to break these
23:47 atoms apart the electricity is sent through two special pieces of metal called electrodes.
Isn't that special?

Rather than burning hydrogen in an internal combustion engine, it employs an electrolyzer, a fuel cell and electric motor[s] in a open loop (like the old Stanley Steamer).

I believe any thing is possible. I always hear rumors and talk of this but never see it in mass production. People hype it up and then they disappear and companies that sell it go out of business.
I 'm curious to know if is the lack of technology and manufacturing methods or others just want to keep it swept under the rug.

Because it doesn't work.

Toyota have a hydrogen ICE in production.

If you watch the (ALL CAPS) video, they talk about liquifying hydrogen to require less space for storage.

That would require cooling it to 20 Kelvin (-423°F).

The all-caps title is the first clue. The special this and special that language as well.

OTOH Toyota does have a history of interest in hydrogen.

I tried watching the video last night but i was so exhausted from work i fell asleep. If i recall correctly it mostly talked about what i had said in my first comment. I don't see how cooling something to -423 degrees is a good idea in this day and age. Seems like too much effort for another hybrid electric car. We don't have hydrogen filling stations anywhere around here either.
This reminds me of the compressed gas cars honda discontinued making at the honda plant my friend worked at. The only filling station i knew of for those cars was right next to the assembly plant.
Maybe toyota has something up their sleeve but i don't think its time yet. I read of so many companies fail at a product just for a similar thing to become popular years later.

Cryogenic propellants make sense for reaching orbit, not so much for cruising for burgers.

Catalyst enhanced electrolysis is the pearl buried in that pile of poop.

Hybrid cars work. They add around +10mpg to city driving and a few mpg to highway miles.
Electric cars definitely work, replace burning gas or diesel with burning natural gas, coal, wind power and maybe nuclear or hydroelectric.
