I'd go trailer for sure. Very stable and passengers seem to like that. Introduces no weird handling issues other than extra braking effort from the extra weight.

Our dogs would lay down and sleep on long trips. They would notice changes in air scents. Streamline both the bike and trailer. Check if loud noises affect the animal.
