News: 2016 MX-5 Miata gets 25% better EPA rating than 2015 Miata

This is cool. A 25% improvement from 2015 to 2016 is a massive jump.

Compare...

2015 MX-5 Miata 2.0L (manual1 / manual2 / automatic) EPA ratings
  • City: 22 / 21 / 21
  • Highway: 28
  • Combined: 25 / 24 / 23
(Anybody know the difference between the 2 manuals?)

2016 MX-5 2.0L (manual / automatic) EPA ratings
  • City: 27 / 27
  • Highway: 34 / 36
  • Combined: 30
How?

There has to be much more to it than just that. Gearing? Tire size/RR? Power/torque changes?

Anyway, nice to see.

They did the same with the Mazda6. Compare like engines between 2013 and 2014 and there is a big jump.
Compare Side-by-Side
24 -> 29 combined with the 2.5L with manual tranny.

The Skyactiv engines are way more efficient at low load. The torque curves are pretty telling, knock with the high compression ratio is managed by lowered VE cams. Direct injection makes up for some of it.

Gearing is probably taller due to the lower curb weight. EPA numbers for manual transmissions punish the 1st gear for being short which is stupid.
