tuning forum? new old car. where to start?

I started driving my '89 Firebird again. 5.0L V8 automatic, 2.73 gears. It gets 14mpg currently in a 30 mile commute (one way). I want to try to improve that. Where should I start? I was thinking to switch from throttle body injection to tuned port injection with an aftertmarket ECU.
Thanks

There must be something wrong with it. My pickup does better than that.

the rear ratio should work for better gas mileage than 14mpg on the freeway
Gas Mileage of 1989 Pontiac Firebird/Trans Am
EPA got 24 on the freeway, 15 in town.

What is the speed/mph of the commute?

if your average is 30-35mph, there is not a lot you are going to do to increase that number very much.

Do you have a smog pump? I'm not sure if ditching TBI will help you much, but the smog pump may be a fuel waster.

If you are going to go through the headache of a TPI swap you might as well go for LSx swap with a cheap 4.8 and ls1 intake to clear the hood. Then with something like HPTuners you have tons of tuning options.

I agree that you should be getting better than 14 unless it's a hard city commute. Auto or manual trans?

Edit: I noticed you are in LA. LS swap trying to get through inspection might be more hassle than it's worth. Will the car have to be recertified if you go TPI or will you just be arrested immediately for tampering with a cars emissions system?
