Turning Brake Rotors
Does anyone know how much drag hydraulic disk brakes create?
The break pad doesn't come completely off the disk when you aren't pressing the brakes so you get a little drag.
Worse off on my car the brake rotor is radially pretty uneven (not unbalanced) but I hesitate to get them turned and put new brake pads on them because I don't have any braking issues and the pads still have enough meat in them to probably last for the remaining life in the car.
But I might be able to justify the work if it improves mpg.

BRAKE.
Radially uneven? That's odd, and turning them in the normal way won't touch that.
If the pedal pulsates when braking get 'em turned. If not, and it looks good, leave 'em.

Problem with turning these days is they typically want at least $20 to turn a rotor, and I can get a brand new rotor for $20-30 depending on the car.

If you're worried about brake drag, look for "brake spreaders" for your car. They are supposed to hold the brake pad off the rotor.

I just did. What I got were tools for compressing the pistons for service.
The way I understand it, the squirm of the piston seal is supposed to be enough to pull the pad off the surface, just a tad, when the pedal is released. Are there springs to help that along?

They are springs that hold the pads away from the rotor. Thanks Gasoline Fumes for the clarification on name.
