if the escort could haul (and that is insane to think about...watch those magnesium head fires) then the escort would be the wedge for the taller van.

you sound worried, lol

I had started ruling out using the car like this before I even posted this, mainly because it would require 2 drivers working at the same time, so we would have no backup driver if one got drowsy. But playing with the theory sounded like too much fun.

I'm thinking that, if I were to simply drive both vehicles at the same time, I would be lucky to get 13 mpg for both vehicles combined. But by them sharing the load, surely the mpg would be higher. If I promise to not actually do this, will ya'll help me have fun sorting this out? Maybe I'm just too much of a closet engineering nerd, but it sounded like fun to me

The aero "advantage" will not be great enough to offset the efficiency disadvantage of running two drivetrains in essentially one vehicle.

If you want anything like an exact answer, you need accurate data about the operating characteristics of the engine(s) and combined shape. If you gather a bunch of numbers, we might help you crunch them. The potential savings can be estimated from other tests, but not accurately.
