I was able to drive my friend's beast of a vehicle yesterday. It is a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, top-of-the-line, decked out interior and very nice all around!
Here are the specs. It is a European website, but the information matches the American model -

We hopped in after church and headed to StarBuck's to work on Calculus (I'm the tutor
). It was past halfway before she told me that her Jeep had a factory trip MPG gauge. I had it up in less time than the Jeep's 0-60! Due to not knowing about the gauge, it was only a 4.47 mile test run. Hardly even acceptable! Here is le root -
Route Builder: custom route created on August 31, 2015
Her average over the past 7700 miles had been
12.3 mpg I knew that I could show her that it could be better.
I had to pass through 9 stoplights from the starting point to StarBucks. I only hit 1 at the off ramp
I did no extreme hypermiling, just easy acceleration, coasting to the light, to backed up traffic and in the parking lot, obeyed speed limits and of course timed lights.
The end result of the short trip?
17.5 mpg
An increase of
42.3% over her 7700 mile average!
The EPA list her vehicle's combined average at
15 mpg. So I still got
16.67% over EPA combined! If I go by city mpg since all her driving is city, I got a
34.6% over EPA city
For a person who pokes fun at my car and my mpg, she was actually stunned and wanted to know how I did that. That is all the win needed
we may have a convert! (one day...)
