unusual paint technique
This guy sets up a paint pattern loating on top of a watery liquid and then submerges parts into the bath slowly, creating surprisingly regular patterns on curved surfaces like rims and rear view mirror housings. (All Russian, no subtitles, aggressive music.)

There's a place on Main Street here that does it. I stopped by to talk powder coating and they had just installed the equipment.

The King of Random ('s sidekick Nate) did this. Spray paint on a tub of water. It was kind of cool, but nothing like a carbon fiber pattern!
I saw a Plasti-Dip video where the guy sprayed the back of an iPad black, then put an anti-slip mat that is supposed to go under a rug over it, sprayed it grey, removed the mat, and it looked like carbon fiber!

It's called hydrodippjng. Quite popular here in Blighty. Can even be done at home.

You could do it at a public pool, but I recommend against it.

The difference being applied to a surface and filling the space between wires. My mother used to make artificial flowers the same way.

There's a guy on Priuschat who hydrodipped most of his interior panels in a carbon fiber-look pattern a few years ago. I had never heard of it before, but his results were amazing.

This was "all the rage" like 10-15 years ago in the import/tuner car scene, same with sport bikes and even with hunters as well (hey, let's 'camo' ALL the things!). I never messed with it because I was doubtful of its durability. I bet a few coats of clear over it would go a long way to keeping it looking good.
