USA 3-cylinder cars

The Daihatsu Charade -1992 and Subaru Justy -1994.

No one here has a Charade or a Justy here, I know their not the most fuel efficient, but the Justy does have optional 4-wheel drive which can be useful.

Aside of the Insight, Metro, Sprint, and Fortwo were there any other 3-cylinder cars sold in the US?

Ford is gonna soon introduce the 1.0L Ecoboost back there, and maybe Volkswagen could follow this trend coming with the 1.2TSI already available in Europe.

...you mean you're NOT talking about a sick 4-cylinder engine that's got one cylinder blown and out-of-commission (wink, wink)???

And has been the Maruti 800 in India for over 30 years - including the leaf sprung rear end - I kid you not.

The ecoboost is interesting - must book a test drive with my friend who is looking at a new Focus soon - the TSI is a 4-cyl though

My car is 3 cyl and it is fun - not the kick in the back TDI fun that Helga was but fun and flexible enough with the VVTI trickery. I enjoy reading the Geo Metro forum's projects section too - cool stuff.

Slightly OT - but as a young new driver I read about economy cars a lot when I was younger - even though I wanted SPEEEEEEEEED. I think I was in touch with my inner economy driver. Anyway one car I always fancied was the Daihatsu Charade Turbo Diesel - I couldn't find a pic but it looked like this :

Read a magazine review here.

Key stats - top speed 78 MPH, 0-60 in 25 seconds, City MPG 78 (imp), @70 it was 42 (imp).

EDIT - Reason for posting - it had a 3cyl, 1.0 TD engine.

Grandmother used to own a 93 Justy (bought new) and was driven like Granny going to church. It died an unceremonious death (1997) when it spun a rod bearing (from what I recall) then put a hole in the side of the engine... at 40000kms. The rubberband transmission had been replaced once, and it ate fuel injectors. Always had regular maintenance but was just one little POS.

The 4wd system worked good but the rest of the cars flaws greatly outweigh that!

No, the 1.2TSI is a 3-banger, altough it has the same bore and stroke of the 1.6TSI 4-banger.
