Using components in a gas generator as a motor?

Is it possible? It seems like if the generator can make x kilowatts of power that you could use the electric motor(it would have to be a brushless motor to make the power right?) as a motor. Would this be possible? I've seen fairly cheap generators that have 5kw or capacity and I was wondering if it would be possible to get out the motor and use it as a 5kw motor.

You are taking about taking the alternator out of a gas engine generator and using that alternator as your drive motor? yes, it can be done, but it's not going to be cheap or easy.
