luggage?
how far?
how long?
stopping in between?
lots of local travel at destination?

we are looking at 8 to 12 people
from Orlando,FL to Denver,CO about 1800 miles

plan on driving all the way with stops only for fuel and food

my navi calculated 30 hours of drive time

not much local travel since we will be stuck working the conference and probably be able to walk to restaurants

You're better off flying than renting. I've done the summer traverse of America's heartland 5 times. It' hot and boring and you'll all be tired and irritable by the time you get to Denver. This is the type of "adventure" that can be hard on a friendship. If you get on the Southwest site the day the fares open up for those dates (about 5 months ahead) you should be able to score some tickets about $300 pp/rt. Frontier is just a little more. Well worth arriving at conference fresh.

the thing is, if we use two personal SUV's we wont have to pay a rental fee just cover fuel and other small costs.

We're talking about a group of college kids here.... broke azz college kids that are giving it all for the organization.

We are going to be there with my three kids and wives and want to exit Paris via one van to go to Eindhoven, Netherlands and drop off the van in Eindhoven before taking the train to Amsterdam for our return flight home.

I work at gogovans.com a 12 and 15 passenger van rental company in San Francisco. We've got a pretty big fleet of Fords and Chevys. In terms of 15 passenger vans we've been seeing our customers average between 12-16 MPG, depending on wind and terrain. We do find that on average, customers who request us to remove the rear seat for addtl. storage capacity end up averaging 1-3 MPG better than those who don't.
