Vancouver To Require 20% EV Recharging Outlets in New Developments
From VEVA Member Don Chandler:
Quote:
Vancouver City Council today approved the report on Electric Vehicle Charging with an ammendment. At the request of VEVA during the meeting, the motion to approve the report was ammended by Mayor Robertson to increase the staff recommended percentage of parking stalls wired from 10% to 20%. Yes, we won! Over the past few weeks, pressure from the Urban Developers Institute who wanted just 5% reduced the recommendation to a compromise of 10%. Although we had asked for 100%, the final decision will lead to sufficient infrstructure that with smart charging technology, upgrades will be manageable without affecting the basic supply.
Brief summaries will be on the news tonight and tomorrow morning. Another interview on CBC radio Early Edition at 7:40 will review the accomplishment. It is time to celebrate. VEVA has been supporting this initiative for two and a half years now, and today was the final decision. It was all that we could hope for. Vancouver is the first city in Canada, probably North America, and likely the world that has made electric vehicle infrastructure mandatory in new residential development. An email from Alexandra Paul at Plug In America recognized our leadership: "It sounds like Vancouver might be a role model for our cities!" Also, a comment from Dr. Andy Frank: "Here is something that is going on in Canada. I think it is a trend."
Yes, in this small way, Vancouver now leads the world in the adoption of EVs. There are many more hurdles to jump, cars to build, and masses to educate. Now that we are recognized leaders it is time to get more involved with VEVA and get on the winning wagon. There are many events yet this summer to participate in. Please come out and help educate the masses. We can all celebrte this major milestone at the Members BBQ on July 25. See you there.
