Am I missing something or does this new rule only apply when a vehicle is placed in reverse? It doesn't seem to address rear view video mirrors used when in drive or as a permanent installation. That and I thought I saw something about "deactivation".

I think you are right about the NHTSA rule posted by redneck. We are hoping that Elon Musk is successful at getting side view video mirrors approved.

That's only for rear view while in reverse. Save the children from people who don't realize what that reflective thing is on their windscreen.

The video rear view mirrors really do give a better view, making back up run overs less probable if not UN-probable. With them you can see from your rear bumper out (plus much more) , which is where little children often are when they are struck/squished or otherwise flattened.

video side view mirrors make the side view as effective as the rear view is, only out the side view..

Cars are backward! Instead of that useless windshield that just shows people who are not me, it should have a flat screen connected to my iPhone, and then have a camera routed to my iPhone to show the road or whatever!

Also, make-up!

I cannot see myself any better in my mirror than on my cell phone and I happen to know where my face is, so I just point the camera at me, take the picture, check my aim, and then delete it because nobody cares. How am I supposed to see their duck face with the camera in front and the flash on? If they happen to have the phone where you can actually see their face, they often look at their iPhone instead of the large reflective surface they require to take pictures of their favorite person in the world.

I once saw a Facebook post something like:

People need to use their turn signals! There is nothing worse than looking up from my iPhone and seeing a car come out of nowhere!--sent from my iPhone

I wonder how well they'll do with the snow and ice. Most people here can't clean off their windows, headlights, or tail lights, let alone a back up camera.
