What cars allow to easily put a super aero body over the existing body?
i.e. like a second skin over the original body.
Thus by keeping the original body likely you'll keep the crash protection.
Maybe convertibles with a chopped windshield being reinforced by a roll bar or roll cage?
Maybe you can use a flip top aero body like Funny Car dragsters?
Of course doors, hood and boot opening will be a challenge.

Why not just a convertible and keep the windshield as is, and just slant back all the way from there? No real downside since the top isn't structural to begin with. Other than rear passenger headroom...

Many body panels are clipped on, I'm not sure how much those types (front fender/quarter panels) really help in a crash.
In addition, the plastic body panels on a Fiero or Saturn may do little in a crash.
I would think that the two examples above would be excellent candidates for body skin replacement using fabric covering (aircraft/hovercraft style) with a light-weight frame for attachment points underneath as needed.

Everything except door protection is here, it's like a Jeep "as is".

Look at a Nissan Pulsar. They have a removable rear section that you could easily mod into a teardrop.

A whole industry was built on this donor. You could shape almost anything on top of it. http://physics.technion.ac.il/~rutma...s/image014.jpg

Pop out the side and rear glass, torch cut the rear pillars and pull them down six inches. Re-weld the roof down, replace the glass with plexiglass. Add a full sized belly pan to the underside. You can extend the tail a bit while you are in there.

I guess you could add a kammback top to any notch back coupe as they do with pick up trucks. GM did it, back in the day.

During the 80s, NASCAR made a resurgence, but the cars were all about as aerodynamic as bricks. Ford made a calculated decision to introduce the newly revised aerodynamic Thunderbird to the speedways with great success. This prompted GM to heavily modify two of their squared off personal luxury cars to do battle with the slippery bird. The Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe was modified from the standard Monte Carlo SS with the addition of a fastback window, and a shorter deck lid. The Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 went a bit further, with an even larger fastback window, a smaller deck lid, and an aerodynamic nose treatment. But are these true fastbacks?

Saturn body panels are plastic.
I'm guessing it would be easy( ier ) to mod one of these cars .

That pulsar idea is really cool. I wonder, are the rear quarter panels on most later model japanese cars, like this pulsar, structural? Could you shave those quarter panels too and not compromise the chassis structurally?
