Maybe once we're all riding in automated cars we'll recoup the fuel lost to that aero mess because ... no more stop 'n' go traffic or need for traffic lights!

Just smooth, computer controlled flow.

Oh, and safe, close drafting!

The sensors are not fully integrated to the existing OEM design, still retro-fitted sensor prototypes. They are still figuring out the optimum sensor numbers, sweeps, heights and clearances. Most early iconic sign is that centrally located 50's 'beanie' police light-style spinning 360 degree LIDAR unit. Still at highest position. they could make it lower profile and/or have overlapping units (most expensive sensor).

I wouldn't venture a guess, but based upon CAR and DRIVER's testing of a rooftop cargo carrier on a Ford Escort in 1981,a SWAG might suggest a 2-mpg loss at 50-mph.
And what we're looking at is probably a transitional,sorting-out technology, which will be miniaturized over time.
