I am attempting this on a mechanical injected diesel so I have full control.
It is possible to achieve the results Autospeed couldn't if you have an aftermarket ecu (Power FC, etc), to reduce the "global" injector value.
I used to run the injector values 15% low, and advance the timing 5° on my turbo S13 when cruising to events, and the economy was definitely improved.
I think you guys are already running lean if you have a WAI though? - which costs next to nothing vs $1000's for an ECU to tweak things.

Good article as usual Julian. I like how you explained the open/closed loops and their variance between engines.
I was a bit concerned that you didn't further emphasise the implications of increasing NOx emissions though. Its some nasty stuff.

Hey Julian!
It's great to have you here. I'm a big autospeed fan, and so are many other members here. Keep up the good work.
The article was interesting and well written. I would have liked to see you tackle broadband sensors as they are more of a challenge, and apply to most recent cars. Maybe for a part 2 someday.

If you plan to run a leaner set up you should first get a EGT gauge.....it is VERY easy to melt pistons while driving at "safe" speeds while driving too lean. Been there.....did that! Melted pistons while driving at just under 80 mph!

OK, that's the first I've heard of someone actually doing damage from running too lean. I'd read it was possible, but there you go!

A buddy from the a-body board has done the same thing, melted pistons from leaning it out too much. I tried leaning out mine before with an O2 signal modifier. It certainly leaned it out, but it also got absolutely horrid mileage. Like 26 highway when I would get 32 any other time.

What A/F ratio were you running? What car, curb weight, and engine/displacement? How long was the car running at 80 MPH?
(Apologies for the 5th degree, I've been watching too much Law and Order)
