I still didn't see any vehicle which was fitted with an automatic transmission lighter than a manual when both are available.
Ummmm, that's basically what I'm saying. I'm guessing the 5 speed R-151F that I rebuilt and installed is lighter, although that REALLY wasn't the point of changing the tranny...

Although if you want to nitter 'bout stuff, there's prolly a whole bunch more in that list that has more potential. I've gotta say, it takes much more effort to actually DO stuff than to nitter 'bout other people's stuff...

Thumbs up would like to fit tdi to my 1989 v6 toyota motorhome

Hi
where did you get info for engine swap and how easy to carry out. as a diesel engine would suit my motorhome lots of low down torque
thanks

Upgraded the intake and exhaust manifolds.
Upgraded the turbo to one from a Mercedes Sprinter van.
Upgraded the injection pump.
Upgraded the fuel injectors.
Upgraded to a BIG intercooler.
Upgraded to a BIG electric cooling fan.
Deleted auto tranny, replaced with 5 speed manual.
I suppose I saved some weight there...
Deleted the AC system
Deleted 1/2 of the exhaust system. It breaths much easier and is lighter.
Deleted the old copper radiator; replaced with aluminum.
I suppose I saved some weight there; it does run a bit cooler.
Deleted the ADD 4wd system and replaced with manual locking hubs.
Deleted some interior bits that were in the way of the shift levers.
Deleted 1/2 of the front bumper - the useless facade half.

I still run big mudder tires on it, and also have a ladder rack and a big toolbox.
It can also pull pretty heavy loads, like a loaded horse trailer or a car hauler full of hay.
In the end, the diesel is very torquey, but don't expect to go fast.

However, the fuel economy is 35% better than the stock v6/auto tranny AND I'm running biodiesel.

Cool

Hi Dave!

Just to confirm, it looks from your signature that you have one of those Toyota-based RV's?

If so, this conversion could work out perfect.

There is an adapter kit available that was originally intended for Suzuki Samauries. The idea of the kit was to swap to a VW TDI motor and Toyota transmission/transfer case. Basically, the kit contains a modified flywheel and an adapter plate for the motor/tranny.

Regarding my information about this, once I decided the best solution was a VW TDI engine, I found a great website, with very helpful folks: TDIclub.com

Fred's TDI Page. TDIClub.com. VW TDI Enthusiast Community

The forums have a huge amount of information about VW diesels - from simple maintenance to optimizing for efficiency to serious diesel hot-rodding.

There's also a thread about people's conversion projects, which now includes some very good ones about Toyota 4-runners and pick-ups. An RV would be a seriously fun addition!

I was among the first Toyota truck projects:

Hope this helps!

I'm surprised at all the people that have deleted their power steering. I'm deleted my passenger mirror because I got a factory block off plate cheap off a member here. Also deleted the carpet because the car leaks in heavy rain and the rubber backed carpet was holding all the water between the floor and rubber so the carpet went in the trash for the same of the floor pans... Thinking about rolling on some truck bed coating one day.

Some rust as well lol

Not just lighter and cheaper to overhaul, but nowadays also a good way to get the truck less likely to be stolen

Why are you surprised? I got an mpg out of it, and I love manual steering compared to power steering.

I have deleted many old posts when I found them later and realized how stupid they were. I removed the power steering in Chorizo, but need to loop it. Unfortunately, my car is not necessarily my property anymore, so that is exciting...
