What is your first car...memory ?

The first memory, to pop into my memory, was learning Physics as a 3 year-old or so. Since seat belts and child seats were were optional in 1980, I quickly had to learn to "lean into the corners" ...or end up toppling over and sliding across the back, white vinyl seat of the '76 Cutlass. Without a booster seat, you had to act fast. The front bucket made the trip a lot easier, although a rare event to be up front. Not being able to see anything but treetops really irritated me until we got a fast-food style "booster" seat.



Now that I look back on it, the Brougham offered velour! They could have bought the Brougham for a few bucks more! Anyway, black with white vinyl front buckets, console shift, and an anemic 350 (cue the Bee Gees, folks).

The first car I remember was the pedal powered firetruck that my Aunt bought me for my 2nd birthday. I had already removed the training wheels on my bicycle, but 4 wheels was definitely the "cats meow". Been hooked ever since.

I do remember an early Ford Maverick, red, 2 door, when I was about 4. On the way to church, in Washburn, Maine, the snowbanks were so high that Dad couldn't see a car backing out of a driveway directly in front of us. Again, no seatbelts, my sister, standing in the front seat between my Dad and me, was saved by Dads' arm blocking her just before we hit. His fingertips grazed me as I headed for the dash. I remember waking up in a strangers' house not being able to see out of my right eye because there was a steak covering it to help keep the swelling down.

Probably why I hate Fords to this day.

2 quick Maverick stories:
My Dad's wife got run into head on as a car accelerating from the opposite side of a 4lane street stoplight dropping something on the floor, and was retrieving it when they plowed into her mid '70's 4door Maverick, slamming her knees into the nearly unpadded dash. I saw her knees the next day; solid black bruising. It effectively ended her school teaching career. She couldn't , and now stand for long periods of time.

Way back when I was 21, was hitchhiking in Colorado on a trip from Oregon to Colorado to see the Pike's Peak hillclimb while riding in a '72 Grabber, the driver spun it to avoid a freeway wreck. We didn't hit anything, but it sure made me very awake!

I like the body style of the early 2 doors. They make great drag sleepers.

The suspensions, and stock seats left a lot to be desired though.

Would be fun to make a roadracing quality sleeper of one!

Dad sold his shortly after the wreck and someone DID turn it into a drag car. 4 years later we moved up the street of the garage in Presque Isle that had the car as "their" drag car( name of the station on the side of the car). Never saw it race, but I always hoped it got beat.
