What's this thingy for? [VW subframe]



Anyone got a clue why the red circled bracket is there?

I'm about to cut it off because I've taken apart 6 or so VW's and not a single one actually had a use for it, so that makes it extra weight.

Possibly for a non-US spec engine and/or transmission,

what cars/age/engines/tranny were they?

They are the brackets that hold the vibration damper to the front subframe. There is a metal brick that bolts there to cut down on noise from vibration.

The actual location relative to other components makes that impossible unless it was an underhung mount. VW are consistent with their 'oil pan is the lowest point' methodology, so I tend to doubt that.
