Describing the car I drive and its personality. My car is big and drives like an old-skool couch on wheels. Put a La-Z-Boy on big tires and soft suspension and that's my car. I like it, despite being a piggy at the pump when used for city driving. It's wonderful for inclement weather since it weighs 1 and 3/4 tons and has skinny, tall tires.

I would respectfully disagree.
Despite being "period-correct", that where it should stay: in that period of time.
I can understand the personal comments by those who were there and survived the attack, but since then, we, as a Nation, have moved beyond that anger and now serve together with Japan in a variety of capacities.
If that argument is used, we would have "period specific" ways to insult any group of people that we have been in conflict with. I could elaborate, but I think the point is understood.

Lol - Rick, we do have period specific ways of insulting just about anyone on the planet... And for every name we can call them, they've got one to call back, so it's about even, then, but I digress.

I'm of the opinion that people ought to evaluate if their skin is really that thin.
If you go back far enough I think that every group be it by gender, nationality, religious persuasion, whatever, has perpetrated bad things and has had bad things perpetrated upon them. Well I can't do anything about what my ancestors may or may not have done. Actually I choose not to do anything about it, as I've not been the cause of the thing any current "aggrieved" complain of. Whether or not I'm a beneficiary of some past injustice is debateable.
Besides as far as "names" go, whether they are derogatory or not resides pretty much in the mind of the recipient, and even within the same recipient they will decide the same term can be either derogatory or not depending on a million nuances.

I think some folks jump right to the second Kübler-Ross stage right after birth and stay there

Rats, you stole my sequeway. I was going to say that I have almost reached the Keebler-Elves stage, but I'm not ready to live in a tree.
