What GM should be investing in is education. This country lacks education about what a car should and could do. A mini van that goes 120 miles, listen, for most people, 120 miles of local commuting is more than a days worth. Except for the occasional long trip that would meet many peoples needs. Society has to embrace smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles. The only reason it is happening now is the cost of gas. If it went back to 1.25 a gallon, we'd be right back on the oil teet. Invest in education GM, then produce an affordable, econo-box that does what it's supposed to. Get it in cheap, get it to everybody and educate the consumer. If we all were in small cars we all would be better off. Save the big cars for the odd trip/vacation kind of thing. YFF

THAT IS WISHFUL THINKING FOR GM.THIS is a company that has a culture of status quo 1965.They have to be dragged kicking and screaming to change. They always lag.Look at how they screwed up suv's and hybrids.Rick wagoner, their latest dinosaur ceo, said he didnt see the imminent demise of suv s in 2005.Ford was already downsizing suv operations.

Educating 200+ North Americans like you are suggesting is well beyond the largest, richest three or four corporations ... combined. Besides, most Americans don't want to hear about efficiency. Too many are hoping there will be some 'trick' that the next president will be able to pull to get gas back under $3 per gallon ... which isn't going to happen.

I want to see GM concentrate on bringing its new vehicles to market and recycling the old ones into bottle caps ...

... and maybe even making the Volt work!

I told ya,GM is unofficially bankrupt now.
GM currently from an operational view, is bankrupt without the 8billion bailout received from taxpayers a month ago. They would have filed chap11 without that 8bil handout. Now the big 3 are all asking for a 50billion handout.Personally,if they get this bailout i say all the ceo's and boards should be fired/ replaced. They are no longer capitalistic enterprises. They are govt run programs.Bob lutz the putz and rick wagoner,2 idiots now asking you the taxpayer for money.Nardelli from chrysler drove home depot into the ground and then stole a 250million dollar severance paycheck from the shareholders.Morons.

Not education, but advertising. Why did so many people go out and buy SUVs and urban pickups? Because the incessant barrage of advertising persuaded them that those kinds of vehicles were "cool". Spend the same amount of money on advertising small, fuel-efficient cars, and you will see the majority of people buying them.

And as for the idea that people will not pay as much for a small car as for a big SUV, have you priced a Porsche lately?
