Wonder what a coat of wax does!
I wonder what a coat of wax does for fuel efficiency. I spent the afternoon giving the car a thorough coat of wax, before the winter sets in. Maybe I'll get a few more yards per tankful

Yeah, been talked about some, clean er dirty, all the same. Since there is no laminar flow to speak of on your cars surface, the texture is insignificant.
This Article has some insight under "Aero Stuff That Doesn't Matter" if you don't wanna take my word for it. Actually, not really my word, I just readed boutz it somewarez.

It may make a difference in the rain, as the droplets will roll off instead of creating a film that ripples etc.
Waxed my father-in-laws pink Suzuki Ignis the other day. Well pink except for the newish bumper, front quarter panels and driver door which are red, its original color.
The hood took 3 times as much as the remaining 3 doors, roof, rear quarter panels and hatch combined! But at long last all is red and shiny.
People came walking by and told me they had a car as well that I could wax if I liked.
I told them the owner of the car I was working on gave me the hand of his daughter, were they able and willing to better that?

Since wax is quite like a lubricant, it may eventually decrease the drag a little.

The velocity of the fluid at the object surface is zero. Wax will do nothing to reduce drag.

I once had a friend who owned a Piper 250 Comanche, turbocharged. He liked to cruise high and fast at 16,000 to 17,000 feet, at which altitude he went over 200 MPH. He said that washing off the bug splats increased his cruise speed by about 2 MPH.

Sure it would become more noticeable at higher speeds, but any slight decrease to the drag that can be achieved for cheap, even if it's temporary, might be accountable.

Forget the possible mpg gains, do it to protect the paint and to help guard about wallte losses.
Every autumn I give the exterior a really deep clean, then steal a garage for a few days, and put several coats of wax on - it really helps protect the car from salt and dirt.
