Porsche replica with a diesel
After reading the TDI kit car thread, I thought I would ask Porsche replica builders if they could build a TDI into a replicar.
So far one builder has said that they may be able to put a Subaru diesel into a 356 replica.
Your choice:

You can pretty much put anything into anything. Depends on how much work and expense you want to incur, and if the end result is worth it.

Like Frank said, its not a question of how fast, its a question of how much can you pay.
That said, that would be cool.
If its out of your budget, how about a TDI locost with a fiberglass 356 kit ?

Cool approach, using modern mechanicals for something that is typically based on an (old) VW beetle chassis. Thanks for providing the link!
Does Subaru have the diesel here in the US yet?

My choice? The second one, it looks much better than the other two. More authentic than the third, by far.
Cooling may be a problem; you'll note there is no radiator opening in the front of the 356.

There WAS a diesel variant of the VW Vanagon that used a 4 cylinder boxer engine in Europe but I am not sure if it was ever sold in the US.

Having belted a Legacy Diesel about for a week a year or so ago you aren't missing much compared to a TDI. The AWD was nice though.
Are there any kits based on a Golf at all, in which case a TDI will drop in. There are a few TDI Kit cars.

They're almost certainly referring to Subaru's fairly new boxer diesel.
It's built low, so it could possibly be built into a Beetle chassis to replace the Beetle's boxer engine.
