An electric car is not a good option if want to go off grid, it's kind of like having an electric clothes dryer.

I'm not totally unfavorable to PHEVs, considering they could eventually also double as a genset during a power shortage.

Only for a while if they are fully charged. If they are like autos, the people only refuel around here when the low fuel light comes on. The lady accross the street only recharges at the gigafactory

Most people with EVs or PHEVs plug in every day and get a full charge. That's the beauty of them, you're always starting out topped up and don't have to go somewhere to do it.
A 16 kWh battery, which is the minimum size to qualify for the full federal tax credit, would power my house for about a day. If it were an emergency, I could stretch that out several days. Since it's a PHEV, it kinda wouldn't matter though because the gas engine would just kick on to recharge when it got too low.
A PHEV holds the potential to be low cost transportation, a battery backup to the house, and a backup generator. Considering my dad just spent $1000 on a generator that connects to a PTO (tractor), that doesn't even account for the diesel engine cost.

I was refering to plug-in hybrids, not battery-only EVs.

You should specify then.

I thought the PH part of PHEV was implied.
