Being I have and use a Class A CDL and therefore am allowed NO judicial forgiveness/slack in court for ANY moving traffic violation, no matter what vehicle I am driving, it's become very noticeable that merely driving the speed limit in the right (slow) lane is highly offensive to many, and I have much greater concern with road rage and/or breathing rolled coal than any tire mileage gains which are way down on the list. I hear you!

I drove school bus and as a result I still to this day drive the speed limit. I also got my only speeding ticket at a bad time financially. Those $160 for a single point off my license cost me all the money I had for food for an entire month. So no more speeding for me.

But man, do people get mad if you go the speed limit! So everyone is always mad with me. Oh well.

Still, the point was people don't care. Going 15 or 20mph above the speed limit instead of only 5 or 10 can be worse than just having mediocre tires. You could also include things like texting and driving. I know people that get big SUV's because "they feel safer" and then text and drive.

I prefer to drive ~7 over the limit on the highway. If someone is doing the speed limit, I give them plenty of space and have no anxiety, because they are abiding by the law.

Can't stand those doing 15-20 under the limit. Scared drivers need to stay home or have someone else drive them.

I realize that four patches of hot rubber are the control surfaces I have to work with. Tread pattern, compound hardness, tire pressure is what I look at. I allow a three second interval between cars. If you drive mostly limited access roads low rolling resistance tires are worth considering. The curves are less sharp and there is more run off room to avoid a collision. Yes I drive the speed limit when the road is dry, less in the rain or show. Accidents waste time.

When I got my speeding ticket I was going 9mph above the speed limit in a 40mph school zone. Back then I normally went the speed limit, but I was being "pushed" by someone who was right on my tail. When the police pulled out behind us I thought they were going to pull him over for tailgating. I hadn't realized I was going a full 9mph above the speed limit.

One of my many speeding tickets involved a section of I5 where I know people who don't know how to handle a mild bend in the road slow down, so I stayed in the left lane to get around those wanting to go well under the speed limit. Someone came up quickly on me and tailgated, so I maintained speed as the limit reduced so I could find an opening and move out of the way. The cop pulled me over and ticketed me. 2nd time my license was suspended. In Oregon, 2 tickets in 2 years suspends your license, although having your residence on the sidewalk in front of private property and pooping in the street is encouraged.

To completer this picture we need to know
what affect inflation pressure has on both traction and wear.

Further, that graph is for a particular tire under a certain load. When tires are tested according to standard conditions a good RR tire will get less than 6.5 N/kN (EU Rating of A) = 0.0065 on that graph - and a bad one will be worse than 10.6 N/kN (EU rating of E) = 0.0106 on that graph. That's a 60% difference.

I was under the impression that rolling resistance hardly changes with speed.

But air drag greatly changes with speed.
