As I mentioned earlier, I'll be paying attention to your work.

I have an 03 VW TDI that I'm working on to be road ready in the spring. My goal is 65 MPG (imp)...hopefully without too much effort. I will lean out the IQ as much as I can, and play with the injection timing a bit. My plan is to also to swap in a taller 5th gear set and do some hypermiling work to see if 70-mpg (imp) is possible. Time will tell.

My curiosity is with the UK/euro model cars that weren't and still aren't available here in Canada. I see on the UK VW site, the new Polo with the BlueMotion 1.4 TDI is listed @ 91.1 MPG. Nothing even close to that here as far as I know. I have friends with brand new TDI's, and they're only getting 60 MPG (imp).

Anyway, like I said, I'll be following along with interest.

By the power* vested in my brother by the state of teh internets, the hot start issue has been resolved temporarily*.

Removing the temp sensor plug means it thinks "brrrr, glowplug time" and fires right up

A new sensor will be bought once i've actually had a look at the car to determine what needs doing

That may happen this weekend!

They don't get anywhere near the 91.1 MPG quoted. Euro manufacturers have gotten very good at playing the FE test, and now vastly inflate the numbers on many engines (best example being Fiat 500 TwinAir).

Real economy on the BluMotions is generally in the 60s.

Thankfully this polo with the old tech lump seems to get close to published figures

Looking on spritmonitor there is a user with 121 fills averaging 4.46l/100km- that is about 63 imp mpg

If i can get near that shortly i'll be happy!

Noticed last night and this mornin that the car is surging a wee bit under light load..

Dunno if its a combo of cold weather plus temp sender disconnect..

I may plug sender back in and see what happens

So far this has failed to proceed this morning..

I'm hoping a battery check top up and charge will restore starting ability. Still, it gives me something to do before the good lady gets home..

may also get more of a look at it later in the week

Are the glowspirals still good? If the preheat is.nt good it uses alot of battery power. Are you planning aero mods? I noticed on my old polo the upper grillblock and simple frontwheelarch skirts made the car a lot quieter.

I've not had a chance to pull out the glowplugs yet-its never funbon these old derv lumps. I wonder if my brother still has some spare..

the fact that the clock resets is making me think that the battery voltage is dipping too low-and that i may need a new one.
