Tell them you pay for your own gas. Current rental (truck is having transmission work again) is a Yaris. They wanted to "upgrade" me to a Malibu and I got the Yaris after telling them that I want a small car because I'm driving a lot of miles and pay for my own gas.
Last rental they wanted to "upgrade" me to a Buick LaCrosse. When I pleaded with them, they gave me the Prius instead. :-)
