if you'd be willing to drive a manual, sell your car and get one with a manual. i dont think the autos would be so bad if they werent 3speeds, but they are. a car just like yours, but with a manual, is rated 8mpg better for hwy. if youre set on the one you have, i'd get the front end / suspension / alignment / tires and wheels in order. while it may help mileage/tire wear, more importantly there may be something that could be a safety issue in there too from what you described.
