With many ATs, you can leave the vehicle in "D", make sure it's in TC lockup and turn the key off to cut fuel delivery and engine brake. Then, you can turn the key back to the On position without using the starter.

Modern engine will cut fuel on decel anyway (DFCO), but if you need that in-between of compression braking without downshifting into a more aggressive gear, it's something to consider.

Since you lose ABS, Airbags, and most importantly, the Radio, a fuel-injector cut switch might be the best option for this.
